Supporting training, education and research

One core function of EUROfusion, which supports and funds the European research activities, is to co-ordinate the training and education activities for European fusion research. For the years 2019-2020, 8M€/year and 6.5M€/year is allocated for education and training programmes, respectively. Through the Enabling Research Grant scheme, it also provides funding to diverse research projects carried out at the consortium laboratories.

Researcher Grants

EUROfusion Researcher Grants (ERG) support about 10 post-doctoral researchers or equivalent for up to two years. For the ERG, the proposed research project must be a scientific or technical topic relevant to the objectives of the European Fusion Programme. The core criterion for awarding the grant is the qualification of the candidate and the merit of his/her proposal.

Engineering Grants

EUROfusion Engineering Grants (EEG) provide funding for around 20 engineers for a period of three years. For the EEG, the programmes must address one or more of the high priority areas, which are defined by the EUROfusion Programme Manager in agreement with partner organisations such as Fusion for Energy, the European Domestic Agency for ITER.

The EUROfusion General Assembly, the highest decisive body in the consortium, has allocated a budget of 41M€ for the periods 2014-2018 and 2019-2020 to support fusion-related PhD and pre-doctoral studies of students from member states. In certain cases, master students working on theses related to fusion may be offered support to participate in schools and conferences.

FuseNet, which closely collaborates with EUROfusion, provides a platform for European fusion education activities.


Enabling Research

EUROfusion identifies projects as key in the pursuit of new science and technology and supports them through the Enabling Research (ER) scheme. EUROfusion’s Science and Technology Advisory Committee, which evaluates and selects the ER proposals, acknowledges that some of these projects fill critical gaps in the EUROfusion programme. The aim is to increase the exchange of ideas from other fields.
