The detection and analysis of the spectrum of radiation emitted by a plasma. These emissions can be triggered by collisions between plasma particles, by exciting the particles with microwaves, or when the hydrogen atoms from the neutral heating beam pass their electron to a plasma ion. Spectroscopic measurements of different parts of the electromagnetic spectrum yield information about plasma temperatures, impurities, rotation, etc.
