Application of a compound containing boron to the inner surface of a vacuum vessel to help reduce impurity radiation. This significantly improves the plasma performance due to suppression of the metal liberation from the in-vessel components, by the reduction of hydrocarbon formation on carbonaceous surfaces, and by the control of oxygen plasma impurities via gettering processes.
