#4 Cellular Neural Networks (CNNs) for data processing

A team from the Università di Catania developed a hardware system for real-time image processing in the JET tokamak. By using this Cellular Neural Network (CNN) researchers can detect hot spots in the plasma facing components in JET in real time. The FUTTA project has identified various other applications for CNN. Some of them include:

  • video surveillance e.g. remote and mobile monitoring, loss prevention, facility protection, traffic monitoring, public safety, employee safety
  • medical imaging (real-time MRI, surgery, diagnostics, image segmentation)
  • vision-assisted intelligent robots
  • neural network modelling
  • real-time locomotion

The complexity and the multidisciplinary nature of fusion research produced number of spin-offs that have found applications in industry, other scientific disciplines, and technological advances. The areas that have benefited from fusion research span a variety of fields ranging from medicine and material science to computing and astrophysics.

EUROfusion has identified some of these spin-offs, looked at fusion research aspects that have the potential for short-term benefits, and prepared a non-exhaustive list of fusion spin-offs which demonstrate the short-term benefits of fusion research on the way to fusion electricity.
