London: CCFE’s team was run off their feet at their stand in the Big Bang Fair for young scientists and engineers, as an estimated 5000 students visited during the four day festival in London’s Excel convention centre. Staff armed with tablets encouraged students to paw a huge plasma ball, drop magnets through pipes and to try their hand at tokamak maintenance with EFDA’s remote handling demo from Fusion Expo, as hands-on ways of learning about fusion.
Organiser Joana Silva coordinated a team of 21 staff across the four day event, in which time an estimated 70 000 students passed through the fair, taking advantage of over 100 stands, shows and activities. Surveying the stand, with thirty-plus students pressing around the exhibits and grabbing giveaways, Ms Silva manages a smile; “I think it was worth coming!” she says.
