During JET’s shutdown for in-vessel work the opportunity arises to perform detailed maintenance on other parts of the plant. In this photograph the top bearing housing of one of the 800 tonne Flywheel Generators was opened and the view looking up at the underside of the 8 megawatt pony motor that drives it can be seen. These machines are used to supplement the hundreds of megawatt of power from the grid to supply peak power (each machine) of up to 400 megawatts for short durations to the JET magnetic coils.
